How are astrocytomas graded?

Both tumour type and grade have an important impact on survival. The type and grade of tumour is confirmed by assessing any biopsy specimens under the microscope (histology).  Astrocytomas are classified from World Health Organisation Grade (WHO Grade) I to WHO Grade IV tumours.  Whilst Grade I tumours require only surgical treatment, Grade IV tumours may require radiotherapy and chemotherapy in addition to surgery.
