How is hydrocephalus diagnosed?

Where the diagnosis is suspected, a cause should be sought.
In the antenatal period the diagnosis may be made by ultrasound scan of the baby while still in the womb. An MRI scan of the foetus can also be performed. In all other patients a CT scan is mandatory and most patients will also have an MRI scan of the brain. Patients should also have a scan of the spine in most instances.
