Surgical treatment of spina bifida and spinal dysraphism

Following Antenatal screening and diagnosis the baby is delivered by elective Caesarean section in a neurosurgical unit. Closure of an open myelomeningocele is performed within 24 hours followed by treatment of any accompanying hydrocephalus. Full imaging of the spine and brain with MRI should be performed within the first three months of life. The child will then require follow up with the urology team and urodynamics and will eventually be taught intermittent self-catheterisation. The patient will require life long follow up with the neurosurgeons.
