About

What is a Discectomy?

A surgical procedure to relieve pressure on spinal nerves.
A discectomy is the removal of the part of a spinal disc that's pressing on a nerve.

When a disc bulges or ruptures, it can compress the nerves running through your spine, causing pain, pins-and-needles or weakness in your arm or leg. Removing the offending disc fragment relieves that pressure.

Modern discectomy is precise and minimally invasive in most cases. The vast majority of patients go home the same day or the day after. Most are back to gentle activity within two weeks.

There are four common approaches the right one depends on the location of the disc problem, its complexity, and what matters most to you in recovery. We compare them directly below.

Which type of discectomy is right for you?

Four established approaches, each suited to a different combination of disc location, severity and recovery priorities.

Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion

Anterior cervical discectomy and fusion or anterior cervical discectomy and replacement.

Endoscopic discectomy

Keyhole, same day surgery to remove a herniated or prolapsed disc.

Lumbar spine discectomy

A lumbar spine discectomy is used to treat compressed nerves in the lower spine.

Microdiscectomy

Minimally invasive surgery to treat the symptoms of a herniated lumbar disc.

Most patients don't know which procedure they need, and that's fine.

That’s the consultant’s job. Send us a quick note about your symptoms or any recent imaging, and we’ll arrange the right specialist for your situation, within the same week, either in person or by video.

No-pressure, no-obligation.
